About

I’m a writer from Sheffield, England.

I’m married with one dependent cat, Munchie.

Picture of my cat, Munchie

The lord of the house - Munchie

I have a day job working at a desk with spreadsheets but away from that I write. Last year I completed a Diploma in Creative Writing and I’m busy writing and editing my novel before I start submitting work for my share of the rejections.

I plan to read more and write more and so far in 2012 I’m managing to do both. I am easily distracted by shiny objects (particularly LIVE sport) but I seem to have found my focus to write.

Two stories – The Forbidden Room; and Birthday Surprise are included in the e-book Just Get It Out There which is Out Now !

  1. Appreciated your blog on dieting & writing, and am challenged to discipline myself to accomplish my writing goals.

Pete, you set a great example for many of the rest of us. You have actually written your rough draft, & edited 5 chapters. Congrats, and thanks.

Hi, Pete. It’s always cool for me to find another writer in the blogosphere. Pleasure to meet you!

  4. sandrabranum says:

Wow you’re writing a novel. How are you doing with your script writing? I’m thinking about self publishing a poetry book because I seem to do better with that than anything else. Of course I may change my mind if I get rejects for the poem submissions still pending. Thanks for the like. Regards.

    • Pete Denton says:

Hi, the script writing has taken a backseat while I finish my novel. I wrote a 30 minute film script for my final assignment on my course and I plan on submitting that to the BBC, but I want to tinker with it first.

Good luck with the poetry and an ebook sounds like a good idea.

  5. Congratulations! I have nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award- http://allaboutlemon.com/2012/01/02/an-awe-inspiring-new-years-surprise/ Happy New Year!
    Enjoy!

  6. This is kind of silly, but I REALLY like the progress bars on your blog (for your crime novel and last reads). Did you make them yourself? Get them from somewhere? Honestly, I wish there was a “like” button for them (I’m pretty nerdy, aren’t I?).

Oh yeah, I like the rest of your blog too (as much of it as I’ve gotten to so far). Your writing style is easy to read.

Nominated you for the Kreativ Blogger Award! Thought you should know 🙂

  9. April Hawks says:

I am super excited for you! I, too, am writing a crime/mystery novel. I particularly like that you post your progress on your work online! That is a great idea!

    • Pete Denton says:

Thanks for visiting. The progress bar helps keep me working. If I put it on the site then I have to keep working, right?

All the best with your crime novel. I’ll keep checking your site for updates.

  10. Thanks for the kind words over on Thoughts on Theatre. Good luck with all of your creative endeavors!

  14. Hi Pete,

Wanted to thank you for liking a recent post of mine. I too had to check out your blog because of our shared last name.

Actually, Denton is my married name (though I am now divorced and back in the States), My ex’s family hailed from the Barnsley / Sheffield Yorkshire area so you might be a relation.

Good luck with your writing (I finally have a full manuscript in the hands of a publisher–for review–after 5 years). Thank goodness the publishing world is changing…opening up. Believe in yourself and you will succeed. I look forward to reading what you offer here very soon.

    • Pete Denton says:

Thanks, Shannon. I’m behind with accepting awards at the moment so I may be a while!

      • I know the feeling… I love getting them, but they’re quite a bit of work sometimes. I’m thinking of creating an award with a simple rule set such as: thank the sender, nominate 1-3 blogs, and share your favorite color. If I have to count past 4 while typing I have trouble 🙂

Hey Pete, thank you for liking my posts (and sorry it took so long to thank you), it means a lot to me to have other writers enjoying my work, especially that piece. And I also feel the need to ask you about the progress bar on your page. I’d love to have something like it for motivation, where did you get it from?

Again thanks for reading and I enjoy reading your blog as well!

  19. Anna Harte says:

Hi Pete! Have to say, you sound like an individual with some serious work ethic — day job, writing nights, blogging away in between? That deserves a medal 😉 Also, just a thought, but you mention “submitting work for my share of the rejections”… Ever think about self-publishing? It’s got it’s upsides, including no vying for the attention of agents/publishers/etc. Again, just a thought. Good luck with your book(s)!

    • Pete Denton says:

Thanks, Anna. As it happens, my writing group is in the process of self-publishing an anthology of short stories and poetry. I do want to try and go the traditional route first but the more I read about self-publishing the more I warm to it.

  32. Hey Pete,
I recently had another writer send me this excellent self done interview in the form of a blog chain. It suggests that I send it to other authors that I know and Of course you came to mind. Here are the basic questions. I can’t wait to see what your answers are.

    Conr’

What is your working title of your book (or story)?
Where did the idea come from for the book?
What genre does your book fall under?
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Who or what inspired you to write this book?
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Be sure to link back to me as the originator and then tap 2-5 others who are writers like us who could benefit from the exposure.

Hey, I have nominated you for the Sunshine Award 🙂 the post is here – http://writersblock93.wordpress.com/ If you don’t want to or cant no worries 🙂 If no, no worries!

  42. Pete,

Hopefully it is ok to send you a message like this via your comments section. I did not see any other contact information.

First things first, great job with the blog. I love the variety and the great insights that you blog about writing and being a writer. That being said I was curious if you would be interested in doing a guest blog post for my blog? I have decided that I would like to get more people’s perspectives on writing so that my blog can help more writers. And I was thinking that having a blog post from England would be great. Not because I am going to ask you to explain the difference between writing in England versus the US or anything like that. But I do think it would interesting to just see your normal writing routine in your own words. When I lived in England I discovered that there were plenty of subtle differences in the culture, society and life in general. And I think it would be awesome to get that kind of perspective about writing. Just a post that is what you already post, a day in the writing life of Pete Denton.

Granted I totally understand if you have a packed schedule and won’t be able to do it. But if you are let me know. hcmiller(At)asideofwriting(Dot)com

    Cheers,
    Conr’
